What Causes Cuboid Syndrome?

Cuboid syndrome is caused by a dislocation of one of the small cuboid bones located in the foot. The dislocation that causes cuboid syndrome makes the affected bone drop towards the sole of the foot. Cuboid syndrome is typically caused by an injury to the foot or ankle. Symptoms can include pain along the outside of the foot, which is made worse by bearing weight, swelling and tenderness on the outside of the foot, and oftentimes difficulty walking. Treatment typically includes manipulation of the bone to return it to its correct position and then taping and bracing the foot to help the bones stay in the correct position. If you are experiencing and type of foot pain, or would like more information about cuboid syndrome, please consult with a podiatrist today.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Simple Stretches May Help a Sprained Ankle

An ankle sprain can happen as a result of a fall, or if the ankle unexpectedly twists severely to one side. The ligaments can become overstretched, and this type of injury is often accompanied by pain and discomfort. Additional symptoms that many patients experience can include bruising, swelling, and it can be difficult to walk. Moderate relief can be found when the affected foot is elevated, and simple stretching techniques are gradually performed. The ankle may become stronger when a scarf or similar object is wrapped around the sole of the foot as the toes are pointed upwards, while pulling  gently toward the body. Some patients find it helpful to wear an elastic bandage around the ankle, and this may help to provide the stability that is needed as the healing process occurs. If you have sprained your ankle, it is recommended that you consult with a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Treatment Options for Fungal Nails

Are your toenails thick, crumbling, or yellow? Do you find yourself avoiding certain activities and open-toed shoes for fear of someone seeing your nails? If so, you may be suffering from onychomycosis, or a fungal nail infection. Though it can be an embarrassing problem, you are definitely not the only one facing it. Approximately 10% of the general population is afflicted by a fungal nail infection. Beyond just their appearance, these infections can also cause toe and foot pain, lead to bacterial infections and ulcerations, and can even cause complications in people with diabetes. Topical or oral medications may help, though they are not always effective, and have the potential to lead to serious side effects. Laser treatment is another option that may be effective. If you have developed a toenail fungus, don’t hesitate to talk to a podiatrist who can help you select the treatment option that is best for you.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

Falling and Elderly People

Falling is a common occurrence among older individuals. This can happen for several reasons, including poor vision, muscle weakness, and balance, which may be affected from taking certain medications. Medical conditions such as diabetes may cause neuropathy, and many patients can experience numbness or tingling in their feet, making it difficult to walk. Effective prevention techniques that may help to prevent falling can include improving lighting in the living environment, and installing grab bars in the shower and toilet areas. Additionally, it is beneficial to have existing medications and their dosages checked regularly. If you would like information about how falling can affect the feet, please confer with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
