Women can feel comfortable wearing high heels in various settings, from casual to formal occasions. The appeal of wearing this type of shoe may include making an individual look taller while enhancing the shape of the legs. Despite this attraction to wearing high heels, they may not be the best for the feet when they are frequently worn. The higher the heel, the greater the impact they can have on the ball of the foot. The heel height can reduce the range of motion in the ankle and may decrease support in the heels. This may cause ankle instability and result in enduring an ankle fracture or sprain. Bunions and hammertoes are common ailments among those who wear high heels daily. The toe areas of high heels can be narrow, causing the toes to shift together and possibly leading to unwanted foot conditions. High-heel wearers may want to compromise and choose a shoe with a wider toe box and a lower heel. If you would like to have additional knowledge about how the feet are affected by wearing high heels, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.

How a Stress Fracture Occurs

Having tired muscles in the feet can cause a stress fracture to occur. These muscles can become fatigued by increasing speed and distance too quickly while running, which may cause the inability to absorb shock. The stress can be placed on the foot bones, possibly leading to a stress fracture. A common symptom of a stress fracture can consist of gradual pain while walking or running, which may decrease when activity is temporarily stopped. The area may also feel tender when touched, and this may propel patients to seek medical treatment. This often begins with resting the affected foot, and many people choose to wear a protective boot or cast that can encourage mobility. The average recovery time is between six and eight weeks, and it may help to pursue non-impact activities. If you have foot pain, and fear you may have a stress fracture, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat this condition.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

First Sign of Plantar Fasciitis

One of the first signs of plantar fasciitis is heel pain. This pain will gradually worsen if medical attention is not promptly received. Plantar fasciitis is an inflamed or irritated plantar fascia, the band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes. It is instrumental in pointing and flexing the foot, which is crucial in completing daily activities. This condition can happen from standing on hard or uneven surfaces for long periods of time, or from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Mild relief may be found when the foot is rested and elevated, and gentle heel stretches are performed. An effective stretch consists of standing on a step while lowering one heel at a time and repeating for several repetitions. Some people may find it temporarily helps to wear a night splint, which can naturally stretch the calf, heel, and arch. If you have heel pain, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can provide you with more permanent solutions.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

Why Does My Heel Hurt?

Heel pain is a common foot condition, and there are various reasons why it can happen. The largest tendon in the body is called the Achilles tendon, and it attaches to the heel. An injury can cause this tendon to become torn or irritated, and heel pain may ensue. Many people suffer from plantar fasciitis, which is caused by an inflamed plantar fascia. This is the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes, and the pain is often felt in the heel. The condition that is known as neuropathy can cause the inability to feel sensations in the foot, including the heel. Waking can be difficult, and patients may need to use a cane or walker to maintain balance. A stone bruise is a heel disorder that can happen to people who jump from heights and lands on their feet. This condition may affect the heel pad, which acts as a shock absorber and may possibly become damaged. If you have heel pain, it is strongly suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can determine what the reason is and offer treatment options that are correct for you.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Associates of Victoria. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
